The overall objective of the Project is to strengthen the implementation of the ecosystem approach and ecosystem services concepts in the hydropower development on the national and local levels of EaP countries as a component of European Green Deal – a new growth strategy.
The project is supported by the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum and funded by the European Union as part of its support to civil society in the region.
The Project objectives are:
- Mapping of Ecosystems and their Services (MAES) in the pilot river basins of the EaP countries (one river per country) potentially considered suitable for construction of hydropower plants or heavily affected by hydropower plant.
- Demonstration of applicabilities of InVest models (Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Trade-offs) for the pilot river basins in EaP countries.
- Education of the communities in the selected river basins on the ecosystem services and value of ecosystems for them.
- Promotion of the further integration of further of system of ecosystem services indicators into national and local legislation.
Interested public organizations and activists will be able to participate in the project activities!
In addition, the project involves the publication of a thematic analytical document, the exchange of experience between countries of the region and the EU, development and implementation of joint actions to eliminate the threats posed by hydropower at the current stage of reducing the water content of most rivers in the region in the context of climate change.
Through the project activities, civil society representatives will gain new knowledge about the value of rivers, their role in the environment and sustainable community development, new tools for river protection through Strategic Environmental Assessment and Environmental Impact Assessment through ecosystem services assessment.
