Ecosystem services and hydropower: pilot application of European instruments in the river basins of the Eastern Partnership countries. Case of Armenia / A.Gabrielyan, G.Avetisyan, “Khazer” Ecological and Cultural NGO – Yerevan, 2021. – 20 p. (In Armenian)
This Policy paper is a reflection of the European approach to the mapping and valuation of ecosystems and their services, in particular modern typologies of ecosystems and ecosystem services, mapping tools and valuation methods.. Opportunities and identified barriers to mapping and assessing ecosystems and their services to determine their value and losses from hydropower were demonstrated in the pilot basin of the Argichi River in Gegharkunik region. Recommendations were given on the integration of mapping and assessment of ecosystems and their services into the procedures for strategic environmental impact assessment of hydropower facilities and the introduction of payments for these services into practice.
The publication was prepared in the framework of the regional project ”Ecosystem services and hydropower: pilot application of European tools in the river basins of the EaP countries” , implemented by the International Association of River Keepers “Eco-TIRAS” (Moldova), the National Ecological Center of Ukraine, “KHAZER” Ecological and Cultural NGO (Armenia), Azerbaijan Ornithological Society and NGO “Ecosphere” (Ukraine).
The project benefits from support through the EaP Civil Society Forum Re-granting Scheme (FSTP) and is funded by the European Union as part of its support to civil society in the region. Within its Re-granting Scheme, the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum (EaP CSF) supports projects of its members that contribute to achieving the mission and objectives of the Forum.
The aim of the project is to strengthen the implementation of the ecosystem approach and ecosystem services concepts in the hydropower on the national and local levels of EaP countries as a component of European Green Deal – a new growth strategy.
