On December 23, 2019, the final press conference of the project “Ecosystem approach to hydropower: facilitating the implementation of European requirements to development of hydropower sector in states of Eastern Partnership” took place in Kyiv.
The press conference was organized by the National Ecological Center of Ukraine with the support of the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum and the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Platform Ukrainian Platform.
The participants of Final project conference (Ruslan Havryliuk, Galyna Protsiv, Oksana Stankevych-Volosianchuk, Ilya Trombitsky, Aram Gabrielyan, Elchin Sultanov) state that river regulation, due to the construction of hydroelectric power stations, has led to a significant degradation of ecosystems, the restoration of which is impossible.
The modern construction of hydroelectric and hydroelectric pumped storage power plants (HEPs and PSPPs) and hydropower development plans do not pass proper environmental impact assessments, and their implementation will lead to a negative environmental impact increase and degradation of ecosystems, the preservation of which is extremely important to ensure the balanced development of the Eastern Partnership countries, in particular Azerbaijan, Armenia, Moldova and Ukraine .
That is why the participants of the press-conference calls on Governments, relevant ministries of the Eastern Partnership countries and the European Union to take proactive steps in implementing the ecosystem approach to decision-making processes in hydropower.
