Energoatom assures that the head of the radiation, chemical and biological defense forces of the Russian Armed Forces, Major General Valery Vasiliev, who now commands the garrison of the ZhNPP, told his soldiers that “there will be either Russian land or a scorched desert.”

Vasiliev’s direct speech: “As you know, we mined all important objects of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear plant. And we do not hide this from the enemy. We warned them. The enemy knows that the plant will be either russian or nobody’s. We are ready for the consequences of this step . And you, liberating soldiers, must understand that we have no other option. And if there is the toughest order — we must fulfill it with honor!”.

According to Energoatom, Ukrainian intelligence has information about the mining of power units of the ZhNPP by russian troops.

Actions in case of an accident at Zaporizhzhya NPP

In the event of a radiation accident, as early as 2019, the Zaporizhia District State Administration of the Zaporizhia Region published a Memorandum on actions in the event of an accident at the Zaporizhia NPP for local citizens.

Emergency notification

Remember! The sounds of sirens, intermittent beeps of other signaling devices, vehicles, and church bells in alarm mean the civil defense signal “ATTENTION EVERYONE!”. After hearing it, immediately turn on the radio or TV (channels “Zaporizhia”, “TV-5”, “First National”, “1+1”, “NTN”) and listen to the messages of local authorities. In the event of an emergency, information about the event will be available on the official website of the regional state administration zrda.gov.ua.

Actions in the first hours of the accident

As soon as it became known about the danger of radioactive contamination, you should immediately put on yourself and your children a gas mask, a respirator, an anti-dust fabric mask or a cotton-gauze bandage.

Seal the room. Close the windows and doors, hang them with a thick cloth. Close the ventilation hatches, vents, seal the gaps in the window frames.

Pack food in airtight bags (wrap in several layers of paper, put in jars, pans or bags) and put in the refrigerator.

Create a supply of water by pouring it into containers with lids or stoppers.

Prepare the simplest means of special treatment — soap, soap solution.

Prepare for possible evacuation.

Inform the neighbors. Avoid panic.

Keep the means of transmission of information on at all times, wait for further messages from local authorities.

Safe food

Cooking and eating should be done indoors.

Use only those foods that have been stored in refrigerators, closed boxes, chests, in basements, cellars or were bought in retail chains.

Products from individual farms, especially milk, greens and fruits can be consumed only with the permission of the health authorities.

Use water only from proven sources.

Before eating, use a 0.5% solution of baking soda to rinse the mouth and nose.

Rules of safety and personal hygiene

Try to stay outdoors as little as possible, and if you have to leave the premises, be sure to wear personal respiratory protection, a hat, raincoat, boots, and gloves.

Go outside only for the time set by the radiation protection regime. Children cannot be taken outside. Prevent precipitation from getting on your body and clothing.

When you return home, wash or wipe your shoes with a wet cloth, shake out your outerwear, clean it with a damp brush and, if possible, leave it outside.

Wash the face, hands, neck thoroughly, rinse the mouth and nose with a 0.5% solution of baking soda.

In all rooms where there are people, carry out wet cleaning with detergents every day.

Iodine prevention

It starts immediately when there is a threat of radiation contamination. Iodine prevention is carried out by taking potassium iodide pills internally, and in case of absence — 5% tincture of iodine.

Adults and children over 12 years old — 130 mg or 44 drops of 5% tincture of iodine per 0.5 glasses of water at one time.

For children from 3 to 12 years old, 65 mg or 22 drops of 5% tincture of iodine per 0.5 glasses of water at one time.

Children from 1 month to 3 years 32 mg in one dose.

For children up to 1 month, 16 mg in one dose.

Reception by pregnant women — necessarily with simultaneous reception of potassium perchlorate 75 mg.

❗️ Notification of the start and end of iodine prophylaxis is carried out by local authorities.

Emergency backpack

Put the following items in a backpack or a carry-on bag:

  • documents (passport, military ID, education documents, marriage and birth certificates, employment record, pension certificate, documents on ownership of real estate, cars, etc).
  • money, credit cards.
  • duplicate keys to the house, car.
  • a set of underwear (2 pairs), cotton (2 pairs) and woolen socks, spare pants, shirt or jacket, raincoat, knitted cap, gloves, scarf. Comfortable, reliable shoes.
  • a first aid kit, assembled according to your needs.
  • a supply of food for several days — everything that can be eaten without preliminary processing does not take up much space and is stored for a long time.
  • supply of drinking water for 1–2 days.
  • dishes (pot, flask, spoon, 0.5 l metal mug, collapsible cup).
  • matches, lighter.
  • a flashlight (preferably several) and spare batteries for it.
  • hygiene products (toothbrush and toothpaste, soap, towel, toilet paper, several packs of disposable dry wipes, wet wipes). Intimate hygiene products for women. You can take a razor and a manicure set.
  • family values, heirlooms, but in no case to the detriment of everything else.

This list is not exhaustive. You can supplement it with other things, but you should remember that the total weight of personal belongings for each family member should not exceed 50 kg.

Attach a tag with the owner’s last name, first name, residential address and final evacuation point to the backpack. In addition, indicate the year of birth of the child on the tag of children’s items.

Children of preschool age are given a note in their pocket with the last name, first name, patronymic, home address, as well as the parents’ contact information.

Advance preparation for evacuation

Persons subject to evacuation receive and fill out an evacuee card in advance. You can get a card at your local council . You can also get additional advice there if you have questions about actions in case of emergency situations.

Otherwise, the card is filled out immediately before the evacuation. If you are evacuating through evacuation assembly points by bus, the card must be presented to the employees of the assembly point.

If you are evacuating with your own vehicle, the card must be shown to the employees of the mobile evacuation group at the exit from the danger zone.

Evacuation

Do not panic when you receive a notification that the evacuation has begun.

Turn off the sources of water, electricity and gas supply, put out the fire in the rough.

Notify neighbors and loved ones about the start of evacuation. Provide assistance to children, persons with disabilities, and the elderly.

Take the emergency backpack and go to the evacuation assembly point. They will wait for you at the assembly point at the given address (which you need to find out in advance) .

If you cannot leave the premises yourself, you need to hang a white cloth outside the window or tie to the front door handle so that it is visible from the street, and notify your local council . Social service workers will be sent to help you.

After registration at the evacuation assembly point, you will be moved to an intermediate evacuation point for dosimetric control and sanitation if necessary. Once again, we emphasize the importance of carefully protecting the things you take with you from contact with the environment and radiation contamination.

At the end of the dosimetric control, you will be evacuated to a safe zone. There you will receive a referral to a temporary settlement, you will be provided with food and basic necessities.

Please take into account that discipline and organization, strict compliance with the instructions of executive authorities and local self-government bodies will ensure the preservation of your health and life, as well as reduce possible losses.
