FIRST INFORMATION NOTICE

The International Carpathian School 2024 announces the application for the Winter Session. The event will be held with the support of the project “Education for sustainable development: transferring V4 countries’ experience for Ukraine’s recovery”, supported by the International Visegrad Fund. Experts from Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, the Baltic States, Georgia and Ukraine will take part in the event. The session will be held in a hybrid format due to the state of war in Ukraine. The school aims to introduce a scientific approach to the training of young people for the post-war reconstruction, and integration of Ukraine into the European Union, as well as the coordination of interdisciplinary research aimed at the sustainable development of the Carpathian region. The planned measures are aimed at strengthening the network of educational institutions, supporting student mobility, and introducing informal education among school youth, students and graduate students. According to the results of the Session, a collection of scientific works with ISBN/ISSN indexing will be published.

THEMATIC AREAS:

Section 1. Analysis of the experience of European countries for the recovery of Ukraine

➢ Approaches to mitigation and adaptation to climate change (experience of Slovakia)
➢ Phytoremediation: technologies for cleaning contaminated soils (Poland’s experience)
➢ Cultural heritage: open-air museums of the Carpathian region (Czech experience)
➢ Hazards from fires and their overcoming (The PreMiWaFi project experience)

Section 2. Assessment of the impact of Russian aggression on Ukraine’s environment

➢ Categorization of the consequences of military aggression to the environment
➢ Tools for assessing the environmental impact of war crimes
➢ Legal regulation of environmental damage assessment as a result of Russian aggression
➢ Post-war environmental restoration in Ukraine 

Section 3. Sustainable management of the Carpathian natural resources 

➢ Climate change and sustainable development of the Carpathians
Environmental protection activities in the Carpathian region
➢ Biodiversity, forestry, and agriculture
➢ Preservation and protection of water resources

Section 4. Sustainable tourism in the Carpathian region: challenges, experience, prospects

➢ Sustainable tourism: preservation and protection of natural resources
➢ Tourism: the experience of social and cultural alterations in the Carpathian region
➢ Tools and practices of environmentally friendly tourism

Section 5. Education for sustainable development (ESD): challenges and prospects for Ukraine

➢ Non-formal education: the contribution of universities to the communities’ sustainability
➢ Methodological principles of ESD: an geo-ecosystem approach
➢ Development of the «Carpathian ESD Expert Network» 

We invite students and post-graduate students, early career practitioners, researchers, public activists, representatives of state authorities and local self-government to participate.

Partnership: A network of Ukrainian and European educational institutions, all-Ukrainian and local non-governmental organizations, National natural parks of the Carpathian region, local self-government bodies, tourist bases and green rural tourism estates. The event is held under the auspices of the Secretariat of the Carpathian Convention as part of the Carpathian Expert Network “Education for Sustainable Development”, Vienna, Austria.

For publication in the collection of scientific works, it is necessary to submit materials according to the requirements. The organizing committee may reject or return for revision materials that do not correspond to the topic or design requirements. The best works will be recommended for publication in the professional journals “Environmental Problems“, “Physical Geography and Geomorphology” and “Geography and Tourism“. The selected materials will be recommended for verbal presentations at corresponding sections or included in the poster session.

Terms of participation: There is no registration fee. Information about the venue and accommodation options will be provided for registered participants. Financial support for participation (travel, accommodation) will be provided to talented young people (conditions – see the link). A poster competition will be held as part of the event. The best works will receive a financial award.
