On 24-26 January 2023, the NECU team participated in the kick-off meeting of the CitiObs Horizon Europe project in Oslo, Norway.
CitiObs is a European network of citizen observatories (CO), built on the principles of accessibility for everyone to the database and tools for researching the state and changes in the environmental parameters of the urban environment, as well as the decision-making process for its improvement in the face of climate change.
As part of the kickoff meeting NECU team presented its own vision of its participation in the project.
As a result of the full-scale invasion of russia into Ukraine and the catastrophic impact of military hostilities on the environment of Ukraine, the NECU team made a proposal to shift the focus of its activities in the project in the direction of documenting war crimes against the environment, researching changes in environmental components based on citizen observatories, and integrating public data on changes in environmental parameters into European networks, taking into account best European practices, the methodology of damage assessment and compensatory measures for environmental restoration.
The consortium of European project teams CitiObs unequivocally supported the updated goals of the NECU team and expressed its resolution to fully support the implementation of the project on the territory of Ukraine.
The results of the project will become part of European research networks under the CitiObs brand and, we are sure, will accelerate Ukraine’s movement on the path of post-war environmental restoration.
