As part of the CitiObs project, implemented by the National Ecological Centre of Ukraine with the support of the Horizon 2020 programme and funds from the European Commission, a public observatory, MyCoEnvironment, was set up in the public library in Mykolaiv. As part of the observatory’s work, project experts, young researchers, and observatory participants held a number of events between May and November 2023:

  • An event on the central square of Mykolaiv Educational street environmental campaign “We Learn! We know! We Promote” aimed at informing citizens about the observatory’s activities and reaching a wider audience. It was also aimed at demonstrating the operation of environmental pollution control devices.
  • Eco-quest in the park “Ecosystem Functions of Trees” – the main objectives of the event were to introduce participants to the ecosystem functions of trees in order to further study the role and impact of each tree on the city’s ecosystem, the cost and value of a tree, and to raise environmental awareness.  As a result of the event, the participants acquired the following competencies: knowledge of the ecosystem functions of trees, skills in measuring tree height, skills in determining the type of tree, skills in calculating carbon accumulation, oxygen production, tree transplantation, and the I Tree Eco programme.
  • Eco-quest in Liski Park “The Amazing World of Trees” Aims: to introduce the diversity of tree species in the park, environmental problems of tree maintenance, ecosystem functions of wildlife in the city centre, to learn to navigate the terrain, to develop attention and intelligence.
  • Tree fertilisation. Soil analysis for NPK, pH – Aims of the event: to expand knowledge about ways to feed trees and to investigate the level of microelements in soils sampled around diseased and healthy trees, to compare NPK and pH values. Learn how nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, alkaline or acidic environment affect soils and plants, and how to achieve proper tree nutrition in a natural way. environmental problems of tree maintenance, ecosystem functions of wildlife in the city centre, learn to navigate the terrain, develop attention and ingenuity
  • “Living Water. Measurement of mineralisation and acidity of drinking water”
Aims of the event: to expand knowledge about the importance of drinking water, to learn about water parameters such as mineralisation and pH, how these parameters affect human health, what kind of water is better to eat, what drinks and foods have pH, as well as knowledge about water purification methods. Gain skills in measuring water parameters.
Involve parents in researching the drinking water used in the family. Learn about purification methods and the procedure for contacting government agencies in case of lack of access to quality water
  • Ecosystems from space. Space images to study the state of the environment
