The analytical overview “Implementation of Ecosystem Approach and Ecosystem Services in the Hydropower Sector of EaP Countries: State and Challenges” presents the state and trends of the integration of the ecosystem approach and ecosystem services concepts into the policies and practices of hydropower sector in Europe and EaP countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Moldova, and Ukraine. The challenges these states are facing with the perception of the hydropower sector as a producer of «clean» renewable energy source and the challenges of incorporation of ecosystem approach and ecosystem services concepts into the sectorial policies and practices, such as SEA and EIA procedures and integrated water resources management, are discussed.
The overall objective of the Project is to facilitate the implementation of the ecosystem approach and the integration of ecosystem services into sectoral economic activities (namely, hydropower development and integrated water management), as provided by horizontal EU environmental directives and relevant conventions to which the EaP states are parties, to substantiate the feasibility of implementing hydropower plans, programs and projects..
The aim of the project «Ecosystem approach to hydropower» is to facilitate the implementation of ecosystem approach to the SEA and EIA procedures by the horizontal EU directives and the relevant conventions to which the EaP countries are parties, in order to justify the possibility of implementing plans, programs and projects in the field of hydropower and integrated water resources management.ECOSYSTEM_APPROACH_2019_web
